   jurist, political figure
   Born in Paris, François-Denis Tronchet, before the revolution of 1789, was involved in judicial reform and, in 1789, was elected as a deputy for the Third Estate to the estates general. A member of the commission that dealt with reform of criminal jurisprudence, he defended king louis XVI before the Convention (December 1792-January 1793) and succeeded in remaining in hiding during the terror. Later, as a member of the Conseil des anciens (1795) and president of the Tribunal de cassation, he was chosen by napoléon i to be part of the commission involved in the planning of the Civil Code (1800). A senator (1801), he was opposed to the consulate for life.
